NEWS IN BRIEF: Rankings

`Money' and `U.S. News and World Report' rankings out

Money magazine's September issue ranked Rice the third "best value" in the nation; U.S. News and World Report 's "America's Best Colleges -- Exclusive Rankings" places Rice as the 16th best college in the nation overall.

According to Money magazine, the California Institute of Technology is the best buy, the New College of the University of South Florida second, when considering both cost and quality of education. Rice has placed in the top 10 since Money began the rankings seven years ago.

U.S. News and World Report surveyed accredited four-year schools to determine the "best" colleges in the nation. Yale University comes in first; Rice is listed below Johns Hopkins University (15th place) and above the University of Notre Dame and Washington University (both tied for 17th place).

The two surveys considered such qualities as selectivity, acceptance rates, faculty resources, financial expenditures, SAT and ACT scores, prices and graduation rates.

Money magazine wrote, "Future price increases will stay low, since Rice has promised to boost costs no faster than increases in the consumer price index."

President Malcolm Gillis is proud of the results and said, " U.S. News and World Report says that the graduates of Rice and St. Mary's College have the lowest student debt of all the colleges surveyed. There's nothing subjective about that at all. That's a hard number that you can't doctor. Everybody should be proud of it."
