COLUMN: SA retreat will discuss direction of Rice in next decade

by Charles Klein

WHAT WILL Rice University look like in 10 years? What will the new buildings, majors and issues be? Affirmative action, the library, security, academic advising, tenure, a new basketball gym?

Get a sneak peak at this weekend's Student Association Retreat at the Shepherd School of Music, and help administrators set the university's priorities with student input. The retreat is open to all students, and it kicks off with an informal gathering hosted by Zenaido and Carol Camacho on Friday evening.

The real work gets underway the following day at 9 a.m. as Vice President for Student Affairs Zenaido Camacho provides a vision for Student Affairs followed by a look at the strengths and weaknesses of Rice University as defined by the COFHE reports.

The next two hours will focus on six major areas of interest that Rice must address in the immediate future: Fondren Library, safety, academic and career advising, fundraising, diversity and athletics. The discussion groups feature the likes of Vice President for Information Technology Tony Gorry, Police Chief Mary Voswinkel, Vice President for University Advancement Kathryn Costello and Assistant Athletic Director Steve Moniaci, among others.

A discussion involving communications skills, Leadership Rice and the Classroom Experience follows over lunch. Then Vice President for Finance and Administration Dean Currie will take us through Rice's finances, including tuition, the endowment and fundraising.

The next three and a half hours allow for an in-depth look at Rice's recently-completed Strategic Plan and the Teaching and Tenure System.

After a day of serious discussion and open communications between students and administrators, the stage will be set for positive change. Sunday morning will be a time to use all of the information received over the weekend to create the student's holistic vision of Rice, including ideas for tackling issues this year.

So, contact the SA at 527-4079 or e-mail Maryana Iskander at whales@rice.edu for more information or to let us know that you are coming, whether you can come for the whole retreat or not.

We'll be waiting to hear from you so we can get to work on setting the agenda for the upcoming year and the future.
