New RCIC head is no stranger to service
For Patricia Sullivan, the new co-director of the Rice
Community Involvement Center, service is nothing new.
Sullivan joined the RCIC staff this semester. She has participated in and coordinated numerous service projects both during her undergraduate studies at Santa Clara University in California and while obtaining her master's at Colorado State University.
In addition to inventing new approaches for several programs in California and Colorado, she also volunteered for projects based in El Salvador and Guatemala.
For Sullivan, adjusting to Rice was easy.
"I had directed a community service program before and was really interested in that type of role," Sullivan said. "I wanted to work with students in a university setting."
After she finished her master's at CSU, Sullivan came to Houston to interview for the position.
She took it because it seemed like a "great fit" for her.
Sullivan has already had her chance to work with Rice students. She helped coordinate the Orientation Week Outreach Day, a huge success by past standards. It was also an indicator of the kind of students she will be working with. She will also be coordinating an English as a Second Language program with representatives from each college to help non-English speakers overcome the language barrier.
Outside of advising about six other student service organizations, some of Sullivan's other responsibilities include planning the International Service Program next summer, organizing the Urban Immersion Program for incoming students, managing a resource library and coordinating a volunteer referral service covering a city-wide database of community service information.
