EDITORIAL: COFFEEHOUSE

Institution deserves praise for its contributions to campus.

Few things are as welcome to overworked college students as a warm cup of caffeine-laden coffee and a chance to procrastinate while pretending to study. And few institutions have become as important a part of Rice student life as quickly as the CoffeeHouse.

This is a true story of what students can do: It is a student-operated, student-led organization, founded by a group of Rice undergraduates to provide a good place to hang out.

It's become of the few places on campus where students and professors from all over campus, regardless of interests or college affiliation, can meet. S/Es labor over problem sets, professors meet students, academs discuss their reading.

The CoffeeHouse has always been receptive to students: It provides a venue for performers, from acoustic guitarists to poets and a cappella ensembles, who have no other place to perform; it displays student art and serves as a bulletin board for various causes. The new Rice Cakes program, selling homemade baked goods to benefit worthy causes, continues the tradition.

The addition of a card reader may have legitimized the CoffeeHouse, but the place hasn't sold out.

Besides, their coffee is still great, and their cookies can't be beat straight from the oven. We can't imagine putting together the Thresher without the CoffeeHouse downstairs. May it live long and prosper.
