MAUSOLEUM

We have usually gone to the Mausoleum for their Wednesday poetry night, but it has by far been the most interesting place. Located on lower Westheimer, it attracts a very diverse crowd: Montrose locals mixed with high school kids club-hopping in the area plus some people who defy any classification.

This place is mostly a "bar," judging by the dark and smoky atmosphere and the art lining the walls. The large patio facing Westheimer is a great spot to people-watch.

Other than poetry, there is also chess on Tuesdays, live rock on Fridays and Saturdays and acoustic open-mike on Sundays. Next door is the Mausoleum pool hall.

On Wednesdays the bar gets pretty crowded, so arrive early. Poetry starts around 9 p.m. and lasts for 45 minutes on a slow night and up to two hours when crowded.

There are a couple of regulars who run the show, but everyone is welcome.

The Mausoleum clientele includes numerous members of Montrose's alternative crowd, so expect the unusual.

The Mausoleum is located on Westheimer just west of the downtown grid. Go east from Shepherd or take Main to Elgin (which becomes Westheimer) and go west.
