CAFE ARTISTE
This place is more well-known for its eats than its coffee: It has won awards from Houston-area publications for its breakfasts (which are served all day long). They also have the customary pastries and coffee/espresso drinks.
At Artiste, all the coffee is brewed individually when ordered instead of coming out of a thermos. A small selection of bottled beer and wine is also available.
It is a place where you can really relax. Some tables are filled by people reading, studying or working and others by people playing chess or cards.
Occasionally the cafe hosts entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. There used to be a small cover charge, but I have been assured that it is now free.
Take Mandell (where Rice and Sunset intersect) to 1601 West Main Street (look for the mural on the left).
