EDITORIAL: VOTE

Students have a responsibility to make their voices heard.

On Nov. 5, many Rice students will be voting in their first-ever presidential election. Still other Rice students will face their first-ever election that fateful Tuesday.

So that as many Rice students as possible may vote, the Student Association Senate has been making a valiant effort to get students up and voting -- deputizing students to be able to register other students and putting up a thorough web site for guidance.

The voter registration deadline is Oct. 7. You can find registration cards at the CoffeeHouse, the Pub and Fondren Library.

Rice has gained an internal reputation of having an apathetic student body. We all know that this isn't true. The results from the recent COFHE survey reveal that Rice students are more heavily involved than most in student government. But when it comes to involvement in political clubs, Rice students are actually less involved. If we care enough about issues effective at the campus level, then doesn't it make sense that we would also care about issues at the local, state and national levels?

Dole or Clinton? The Thresher , honestly, doesn't care for whom you vote as long as you do it. We cannot recommend one candidate or another: There are too many different, individual opinions held by the staff to arrive at a consensus. But do you care about your future? Then get registered and go vote. See you at the polls.
