Kent Voss finishes second in sailing competition
On Oct. 5, the Rice Sailing Club hosted the Southeastern District qualifier for the Glen S. Foster Trophy, which goes to the top singlehanded sailor in the country.
The seven districts in the country each host a qualifier in which the top one, two or three go on to the national championship, held in Charleston, S.C., this year.
The Southeastern district, which includes Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Alabama and Florida, gets two berths in the nationals.
The regatta, held at the Houston Yacht Club, was one of the more windy events this year.
With a tropical depression brewing off the southern tip of Texas, winds were blowing at 25 knots out of the northeast for most of the day, with gusts up to 31 knots.
The bay was also unusually rough, with swells from four to five feet.
The racing was close throughout most of the day, but Max Scott of Texas A&M University pulled off a victory with five firsts.
Kent Voss of Rice came in behind with a string of second-place finishes, with Shea Thorvaldsen of Tulane University rounding out the top three.
Rice will be inCharleston on Nov. 8-10 to compete with the nation's best college sailors.
Women's rugby starts season against Herricanes
The women's rugby team had their first scrimmage last weekend against the Houston Herricanes.
Despite losing, the team considered it good preparation for the weeks to come.
The team is predominately composed of rookies, so expectations were not high and they found the game a learning experience.
They will play their first game against Texas A&M University at College Station.
