FRIDAY, OCT. 18

* Land and Freedom ( Tierra y libertad ), a première about the Spanish Civil War, plays at the Rice Media Center at 7:30 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $4 with a student ID.

* A Shepherd School recital of 20th century music -- featuring a pianist, a flutist and vocalists -- begins at 8 p.m. in Duncan Recital Hall at Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Free.

* Frank Odo, professor at the University of Hawaii - Manoa, delivers a talk entitled "Asians in America: Representations and Realities" at 4 p.m. in Sewall Hall, Room 309. Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Cultures. Free.

SATURDAY, OCT. 19

* Come cheer for the football team at 2 p.m. when it takes on the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in Rice Stadium.

SUNDAY, OCT. 20

* The BSA/NSBE Second Annual Unity Picnic takes place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hermann Park. Its purpose is to bond students of different races through something all can agree is good -- free food.

* A guest artist recital, featuring Mozart pieces and more, starts at 8 p.m. in Duncan Recital Hall. Free.

MONDAY, OCT. 21

* It's the last day of midterm recess, which means no classes, so take up polka or something.

TUESDAY, OCT. 22

* A guest artist recital, featuring soprano Karen Parks and pianist Neal Kurz, begins at 8 p.m. in Duncan Recital Hall. Free.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 23

* All classes normally held on Monday meet today. All Wednesday classes are cancelled to equalize holidays by days of the week.

* A workshop, "How to Get a Job Outside Campus Recruiting," starts at 4 p.m. in the Career Services Center in the Student Center.

* A meeting for all gays, lesbians and bisexuals and anyone else interested starts at 10:15 p.m. in Miner Lounge in the Student Center.

* Take a break. Selected Hilarity, a stand-up comedy group, brings comic relief to the Student Center at 9 p.m. in the Grand Hall. Free.

THURSDAY, OCT. 24

* A workshop entitled "Teaching Careers for Non-Majors" starts at 4 p.m. in the Career Services Center in the Student Center.

* The MasterCard ACTS talent competition starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Student Center.

* The volleyball team plays Southern Methodist University at 7:30 p.m. in Autry Court.

FRIDAY, OCT. 25

* Welcome to the jungle. NOD, Night of Decadence, is here. The theme is Wei'kutopo , which means "to indulge oneself in carnal knowledge." Dress Tarzan- and Jane-style. Tickets cost $5 for students or $15 for non-Rice people. However, Rice students can buy $5 tickets in advance for their non-Rice friends. The bash lasts from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Wiess College Commons.

* LEGALEASE hosts the deans of admission from Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California at 12:10 p.m. in the Baker College library.

SATURDAY, OCT. 26

* The volleyball team takes on Texas Christian University at 7:30 p.m. at Autry Court.

* A new IMAX film, Titanica , opens today at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Call 639-IMAX for showtimes. Tickets cost $5.50 each.

SUNDAY, OCT. 27

* Ahh. A lazy Sunday. Head outdoors, spread out a blanket and plow through a favorite page-turner.

MONDAY, OCT. 28

* RSVP meets at 9 p.m. in Miner Lounge in the Student Center.

* The SA holds its meeting at 10 p.m. in Kelley Lounge in the Student Center.

TUESDAY, OCT. 29

* Learn more about one of our nation's most divisive subjects. A forum on abortion, featuring panelists on both sides of the issue, begins at 8 p.m. in Farnsworth Pavil-ion in the Student Center. Sponsored by Rice for Life and Rice for Choice.

* Career Services' orientation on the summer jobs program begins at 4 p.m. in the Career Services Center in the Student Center.

* Come see the volleyball team play Southwest Texas State University at 7:30 p.m. at Autry Court.

* The Shepherd Singers, conduc-ted by Thomas Jaber, sing Brahms, Lauridsen and more. The show begins at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall at Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Free.

* As part of the Holocaust Lecture Series, University of California - Los Angeles Professor Saul Friedlander gives a talk entitled "Two Jewish Historians in Extremis: Ernst Kantorowitz and Marc Bloch in the Face of Nazism and Collaboration" at 8 p.m. in Sewall Hall, Room 301.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 30

* The Health Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall in the Student Center and features a wide variety of tables. Want to quit smoking? The American Cancer Society can help. Need pain or stress management? And maybe you'd like to take a fitness test or body fat composition test to see how you stack up. Plus, massages, hearing checks and $8 flu shots.

* Find out how to negotiate a job offer at a seminar that starts at 4 p.m. in the Career Services Center in the Student Center.

THURSDAY, OCT. 31

* Yum. Halloween treats will be served all day at the Rice Gallery. While there, see Fred Tomaselli's exhibit, "The Urge to be Transported."

* The P.D.Q. Bach Concert, presented by the Shepherd School Student Council, begins at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall. General admission is $5; $3 for students and senior citizens.
