Owls topple Houston all-star squad
The team played a hard game, and through a strong second half effort the Owls won an important victory 10-8.
"The team we played was actually a conglomeration of several men's teams from the Houston area. They had a lot of players from Houston Metro and Houston Bud Light, some of them had played Division 3 lacrosse," sophomore defenseman James Parker said. "This was not the same team we played last year; they brought some guns this time."
At the end of the half, the score was tied 5-5, due in part to a strong showing by goalie and team captain Jeff Darlington. The second half was a testament to the conditioning and preparation of the Rice team.
"We were able to outrun them; the hard work and diligent practice attendance really paid off," sophomore defenseman Cem Karson said.
The Rice offense managed to control the ball for most of the second half, with three goal performances by Stephen Palmer at attack and midfielder Pete Perrino.
Co-captain Andy Dolan dished out three key assists, while Yariv Waks scored his first goal as a Rice Owl.
The defense was able to catch its collective breath and dominated its side of the field for the second-half, killing a two man down penalty at a key moment in the game.
"If it wasn't for the mobility and quickness of our longsticks, we wouldn't have been able to stop them," defenseman Paul Manwell said.
This game was an important tuneup for the Rice team, which will be seeing a lot of action in the near future. "This Sunday is the alumni game, and I am looking forward to putting Coach [Wiess College graduate Joe Riely] on his ass," midfielder Brad Mitchell said.
The team will then travel to College Station to play in the Texas A&M University lacrosse tournament. It will then play Texas Christian University in Fort Worth on Nov. 17, the same weekend the football team travel to play the Horned Frogs.
The attendance at the game, larger than expected, pleasantly surprised the team.
"We especially would like to thank the women's lacrosse team for showing up and supporting us. We'll be sure to do the same in the future," Darlington said.
