Team falls to University of Texas 6-0
The team was supposed to play Southwest Texas State University in the semifinals, but Southwest Texas forfeited the game.
Rice had tied the University of Texas earlier in the season and expected a good game. UT came out very rough, and the referee did not curb the physical play. Early in the first half the team's leading scorer, Sarah Newton, was taken down in the UT midfield. The injury was serious and kept Newton out of the rest of the game.
After that loss, Rice was demoralized and played out the rest of the first half very poorly. UT dominated play and remained on offense for most of the half. Their players played strong and fast to score five goals in the half.
Rice did not, however, completely give up. They came out very strong in the second half. Most of the play was in the midfield. UT did not have a clear dominance and only managed one more goal in the second half.
Rice even had a few close attempts on goal. After one foul, defensive midfielder Annie Adams took a direct kick across the field to freshman midfielder Annie Mortland.
Mortland headed the ball in front of the goal to junior left half back Mara Monoski.
Monoski had a great header that just missed the goal.
"We were much happier with the second half. ... We didn't lay down [after falling so far behind in the first half]," junior Amy Chlapowski said.
The results brought the team's final record to 6-2-3. Although this was the end of the team's official season, they will be in action again next weekend at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Nationals in Austin.
They are scheduled to play Colorado State University, Texas Tech University and UT.
