HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY BY RICHARD LLEWELLYN

The first image in How Green Was My Valley is that of the narrator's house being crushed by a pile of slag from the neighboring mine. The book is the story of his family, his valley, the mine which provided its life-blood and how it came to be this way. It's a bit depressing but hauntingly beautiful, like Wales itself. The narrator's voice is wonderful: sweet, nostalgic and completely believable. The characters and their lives are compelling. You can't help but feel like you've talked to friends. This is a good book. ($10)
