NEWS IN BRIEF: German government sponsors journalism trip

Five Rice students with an interest in journalism will have the chance to participate in a two-week seminar in Germany this May. Applications are due by 8 a.m. Feb. 3.

The program, sponsored by the German government, will take place in Bonn, Berlin and Frankfurt, and it will include visits to government and media institutions, meetings with government officials and journalists, guided sightseeing and some free time.

Participants will research one of several topics by meeting with experts in the field, then write an article for a "newspaper" which will be assembled at the end of the program. All costs, including meals, lodging and airfare, will be covered, with the exception of beverages and souvenirs. Knowledge of German is not required.

To apply, students should send e-mail to German Department Chair Klaus Weissenbeger at klausw@ ruf.rice.edu , including their name, phone number, address, major and year, as well as a brief listing of their journalism experience and, in less than 250 words, how they would benefit from the program.

Questions about the program may be directed to Weissenberger or one of last year's participants: Marty Beard ( martyb@rice.edu ), Charles Klein ( klein@rice.edu ), Vivek Rao ( vivekrao@rice.edu ), Angelique Siy ( alia@rice.edu ) or Christof Spieler ( spieler@rice.edu ).
