INTERNATIONAL BRIEFS: Riots result from conflict in Hong Kong-China talks

On Monday, pro-democracy riots took place in front of China's political headquarters in Hong Kong.

This protest came in response to reports on Saturday that China had jailed dissidents who were accused of counter-revolutionary activities linked to their pro-democracy campaigning.

Adding to Hong Kong's concern is a panel controlled by Beijing that last week decided a string of laws should be repealed. Among those laws were the Bill of Rights and two Hong Kong laws that allow demonstrations and the free assembly of groups of people as in political parties. Another snag in British-Chinese negotiations is the size of troops of an advance party of People's Liberation troops and when they should arrive.
