Last weekend, in a theater far, far away ...

Sid Richardson College sophomore Kevin Murphy posted a sign-up sheet in the SRC lobby last fall for a trip to see Star Trek VI and got about 40 sign-ups. The response was much greater for the opening night of the re-release of Star Wars .

One-hundred thirty of SRC's approximately 360 residents signed up for advance tickets. Word spread, and Murphy soon had requests from students of Will Rice and Lovett colleges, as well as the Rice Association of Transfer Students. Even the Lovett and SRC masters signed up. In the end, Murphy purchased 240 tickets to the show -- and SRC was not the only college to organize a trip or help its members get advance tickets (Jones, Brown and Baker colleges were among them).

What is most remarkable about the massive turnout is that Rice students are notorious for their failure to participate in any event, even ones that are on campus and free of charge. (Once in the theater, Rice students chanted their college cheers and dueled with light sabers.)
