EDITORIAL: INCONVENIENCE
Unfortunately, business hours usually limit how much time students have available for errands: errands that can't be run earlier in the week. It's too bad that banks, the post office and other institutions aren't more understanding of the college students' predicament, but that's forgivable since college students are not the main customers of these businesses.
What is not forgivable, however, is that the administration at Rice has not done more to accommodate students. Although it would be nice to see all the service-oriented offices at Rice stay open longer, our main concern is that the Cashier's Office closes at 3 p.m. when most of the other offices stay open until 5 p.m.
At least the Cashier's Office is now open until 4 p.m. on Fridays -- a step in the right direction. But more than one misguided student has rushed to the office after getting out of class or lab around 4 p.m. only to find the doors closed.
We propose this: Keep the Cashier's Office open until 5 p.m. on Fridays and 4 p.m. on weekdays. We are well aware that it will cost money to keep the office open -- but student life would be so much simpler. After all, students are the primary customers of the Cashier's Office.
