WOMEN'S TENNIS: Owls capture victory

by Mary Summers

The women's tennis team came out ready to play against Northeast Louisiana University on Tuesday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, after getting rained out of their season opener in Nacogdoches against Stephen F. Austin State University.

The result of Tuesday's match, an 8-1 victory for the Owls, proved that they were ready to compete.

The Owls, currently ranked 28th in the nation and first in the Western Athletic Conference, came out swinging in their first dual match of the season.

Senior Paula Myslivecek led the team with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 victory over Northeast Louisiana's Sahiba Chadha at the No. 1 singles spot.

Freshman Elle Lewis, currently ranked No. 88 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, scored a resounding 7-5, 6-0 win over Anna White at the No. 2 singles position.

Juniors Jessica Gagnon and Vessie Ivanova, as well as sophomore Jennifer Velasco, were also victorious, all disposing of their opponents in two sets.

In doubles play the Owls were every bit as convincing as they were in singles. The 19th-ranked team of Chadha and Marie-Claude Ostiguy proved no contest for the Owls, as freshman Charlotte Feasby teamed up with Myslivecek to trounce Chadha and Ostiguy in an easy 8-3 victory. In the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, the teams of Gagnon/Lewis and Ivanova/Velasco won 8-5 and 8-4, respectively

The team played Louisiana State University yesterday and takes on Texas A&M University on Feb. 18 at College Station.
