TRACK AND FIELD: Medley, relay teams finish strong

by Jeff Mercer

Over the weekend both track teams competed in events. The women participated in the Oklahoma Track Classic while the men took part in the Butler University Indoor Meet in Indianapolis.

The highlight of the weekend was senior Brian Klein's efforts in the 800-meter run. His time of 1:48.67 automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championships. His time placed him second, just .21 seconds behind first.

Klein also took part in the 4x400-meter relay and the distance medley, both of which provisionally qualified for the NCAA's. These efforts earned him the honors of Western Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week.

Junior Andrew Burrow also had a good weekend, as he participated in the two qualifying relays as well as provisionally qualifying in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.16. This time placed him seventh.

The two runners could not have done it alone, though. The 4x400-meter relay members of sophomore Derrick Small and senior Quinton Milner contributed immensely to give Rice a time of 3:11.09 and second place in the event.

The distance medley team was also strong, with Klein running the 800-meter run, senior Jeff Lewis running the 400-meter run, Burrow on the 200-meter and sophomore Jamie Price running the 1,500-meter. The team placed fourth with a time of 9:44.8.
