NEWS IN BRIEF: $2 million endowment granted for study abroad
| |
Rice students interested in study abroad but unable to afford it now have a new
hope. Rice recently received a $2 million endowment last month, which will be
awarded to undergraduates on the basis of need.
"We have President [Malcolm] Gillis to thank for this new endowment," Associate
Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of International Education
Patricia Martin said.
The endowment will generate 5 percent interest, or approximately $100,000 per
semester. Rice expects to have the full amount by the end of 1997.
If a study abroad program costs more than a semester at Rice, then students
will need to supplement funds from the endowment with loans, grants or other
means.
Funds will be available for study abroad by the spring semester of 1998, and
possibly as early as the fall semester of 1997, Martin said.
The donor's name and affiliation have not yet been announced.
