One class is not enough for Colorado State University students who feel their
historical background deserves more.
About 50 students gathered in front of the CSU Administration Building in a
peaceful protest supporting the addition of a separate and autonomous Chicano
Studies Department to CSU.
"We know so much about the white race, but we don't know a lot about
ourselves," Ed Guerrero, a protester, said.
According to a press release by the CSU Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de
Aztlan, there are twice as many students of Mexican ancestry than any other
minority group on campus.
However, there is only one class sponsored by the Center of Applied Studies in
American Ethnicity that specifically focuses on the Chicano experience.
According to CSU Provost David Young, the protest achieved its purpose.
Four new positions for faculty will be filled, including two for the Chicano
Studies program, Young said. In addition, students will be asked to serve on an
advisory committee for the program.
