Beer-Bike 1997

The races began with the least intense and perhaps most amusing of the three races. Alumni teams that in many cases had not been put together until a day or even an hour earlier lined up on the track and began re-living their college days, chugging and biking as fast as they could.

A little less than 17 minutes later, Student Association President and event emcee Daryl Shorter announced Hanszen as the winner of the race, sending the Hanszen spectators into joyous cheers before he realized that the WRC alumni had crossed the finish line more than 40 seconds earlier.

The stars of the alumni race, however, were the Graduate Student Association riders who, in their usual fashion, rode in ripped jeans, shredded T-shirts, grass skirts and, of course, Viking helmets. Everyone enjoyed watching the GSA alumnus who rode in one strip of cloth stretched from shoulder to buttocks, flogging himself as he circled the track. Shorter had to remind spectators not to cross the track as the GSA finished more than seven minutes behind Wiess.

The GSA did not finish in last place, however. The SRC alumni team was disqualified due to a lack of riders.

Moments before the women's race began, Shorter announced that the Brown chug cans had been stolen. A swift return of them would be accepted with no questions asked, but if they were not returned soon, the thieving college would be disqualified. The cans were returned just minutes before the start of the race, just in time for the Brown women to emerge victorious, six seconds ahead of SRC.

Brown would have come out of the race gloriously unscathed, but one rider suffered an injury. As she was coming in, Leslie Wren ruptured a ligament due to a brake malfunction.

The tension that was in the air when the men's race began continued until the very end. The GSA surprised everyone by pulling out to an early lead, and for a long time the GSA battled with Brown for first place.

In the end, though, WRC crossed the finish line first, a mere three seconds ahead of Brown.

Staying true to tradition, the SRC men were disqualified, this time for riding a motorcycle around the track.
