INTERNATIONAL BRIEFS: Kengo removed as Zaire's prime minister
| |
Zaire's prime minister, who has been blamed for military losses to rebels in
eastern Zaire, was removed from power by an almost unanimous parliamentary vote
on Tuesday.
The 470-seat transitional parliament voted to remove Leon Kengo wa Dondo after
his government's worst setback in the war, the loss of Kisangani, Zaire's
third-largest city, over the weekend.
Military leaders have sharply criticized Kengo and blamed him for setbacks in
the war against rebels which have allowed them to capture most of eastern Zaire
over the last seven months.
Kengo, whose mother was of Rwandan Tutsi descent, has also been accused of
supporting the rebels, who are believed to be allied with the Tutsi-led
government in Rwanda.
No replacement has been named for Kengo.
