LETTER: Rice certifies teachers well
To the editor:

I am writing in regard to the Feb. 21 article by Vikki Otero about Rice undergraduates and teaching opportunities ("Rice grads `Teach for America'"). Rice does not have an undergraduate education major, and Teach for America allows Rice students to get involved in teaching, as the lead paragraph points out.

However, for many decades the Rice Department of Education has provided opportunities for Rice undergraduates to become teachers upon graduation through its teacher certification program.

Many excellent teachers in the Houston area and around the country have Rice bachelor's degrees and have been products of our fine program.

This was missing, and I am writing to call this to your attention. For further information, contact the department office at (713) 527-4826, by e-mail at educ@rice.edu or in person at Herman Brown Hall, Room 17.

R. O. Wells Jr.

Chair

Department of Education
