Columnist errs by blaming faculty for missing books
To the editor:

It's a shame that all those hours Jeff Zinsmeister (March 21, "Fondren's disappearing volumes speak volumes" ) has spent in the library haven't led to some understanding of what careful research is, if only in understanding the obligation to check one's facts.

First, the English Department is located in Rayzor Hall, a classroom building, and not in Fondren Library. Although four full-time faculty members have offices in Fondren, the other 18 are in Rayzor along with the department offices .

Second, the Fondren circulation staff regularly check all offices, studies and carrels in the library to insure that all library materials are properly checked out. The circulation staff will also be happy to search for any missing volumes.

The assertion that English and History faculty are "borrowing" and hiding the books Zinsmeister cannot find is an unfounded charge for which he should apologize.

Chair

Department of English
