This year, instead of donating a set of books to Fondren Library as past senior
committees have done, the class of 1997 will present a travel scholarship to a
Rice undergraduate.
Along with this gift, the committee, headed by MacKenzie Frost of Wiess
College, organized a variety of events open to students from all classes,
including Ring Party, Hundred Days' Party and Senior Dinner.
"Seniors aren't just friends with seniors. That's why we kept our events open
to all classes," Sid Richardson senior and committee member Anjali Kaimal
said.
Applicants for the travel scholarship submitted a budget, itinerary, and reason
for travel to the destination of their choice. The winner will receive $2,000
and will be announced at Convocation on Friday, May 7.
Senior donations to fund this gift will be collected until April 28. According
to Frost, every donation will be matched by alumni. A benchmark was set at 35
percent class participation.
Alumni will match 50 percent of every dollar donated prior to this point while
donations past this point will be matched one to one.
This year's committee choose the members of next year's committee. "Our
selection process is unique because you don't have to campaign or be elected to
become a committee member," Kaimal said. "We just want people who are
interested in organizing activities for their graduating class next year."
Frost encourages interested juniors to contact a current committee member as
soon as possible. The committee will announce the Class of 1998 members on
April 24.
The Senior Gala, scheduled for Thursday, May 1, marks the end of the
committee's calendar. All classes are invited to the Magnolia Ballroom to enjoy
a semi-formal celebration of the end of finals.
