Movies

Houston offers spacious, clean theaters with showings
practically around the clock for you to enjoy
now
rather than waiting
for films to come out on video. So take a break, gather your friends and flip a
coin to decide which movie to see.
AMC Meyer Park
is often frequented by Rice students. It's not too far
away (just off the Post Oak Road exit on the 610 Loop) and it (and all other
AMC theaters) offers a student discount with ID. AMC theaters are cheaper
during the day as well. When it opened as Meyer Park 14, it was the largest
movie theater in the United States and the mayor declared its opening as "Meyer
Park 14 Day." The 16 screen usually show mainstream, popular movies. The shows
cost under $4 with student ID.
Meyerland Plaza
is similar to Meyer Park in movies, only without the
student discount. It's located right off of the Beechnut exit on Highway 59
next to Planet Music and is $6.75 for all shows except matinees. Pizzeria Uno
individual-sized pizzas are part of its snack bar fare.
For art house films, there are two small theatres nearby. The
Greenway Plaza
3
is on Hwy. 59 near Buffalo Speedway, right next to the Summit. It
usually shows foreign or art films on all three screens. The
River Oaks
theater also has three screens and shows a wide range of movies from the
mundane to the artsy/eclectic It also shows the
Rocky Horror Picture
Show
every Saturday at midnight.
Multiple
Tinseltown
locations around Houston offer incredible stadium
seating that gives you the impression of being alone in the theater, with no
problems seeing past the person in front of you. Last year groups of Rice
students from each college attended the rerelease of
Star Wars
at the
Tinseltown theater on Highway 290.
