The men's cross country team performed solidly, finishing
second, at the Rice Cross Country Invitational last Saturday.
Texas A&M University edged out Rice for first place in the seven-team
field. The competition also included Sam Houston State University, Lamar
University, University of Southwestern Louisiana, McMurry University and Loyola
University. Texas Southern University raced but did not score; defending
champion University of Houston did not compete.
Senior Jaime de Mahy, who completed the 4.1-mile course in 21 minutes, seven
seconds, led the Owls in fifth place. Sophomore Scott Palmer reached the finish
four seconds later in eighth place, and freshman John Jura crossed the finish
line in 10th place with a time of 21:33. Freshman Lachlan McArthur completed
the race in 15th place in 22:04 with sophomore Jeff Piper just behind him in
17th place with a time of 22:08. Freshman Mike Nalepa finished in 38th place in
24:10.
The race was a good showing for the team as a whole and especially for the new
members. "We ran pretty well, and we have promising freshman," Piper said.
Coach Jon Warren was pleased with the result. "I'm really happy the way they
ran. It was an excellent performance," he said.
Alumnus Luis Armenteros, who finished the course in 20:33, won the individual
championship of the Rice Invitational. Texas A&M runners secured the next
three places. Rice feels it can compete with Texas A&M in future races.
Piper is confident the team will be ready for upcoming challenges.
"We will progress rapidly and be ready to compete with A&M by the
[district] championships [on Nov. 15]," said Piper. Warren also feels that the
team has the potential to reach that level.
"A&M has a legitimate shot at nationals and we have a chance to compete
with them," Warren said.
While some younger members of the team may go to Willis, Texas, to compete in
the Cougar Classic
on Oct. 10, the varsity team runs next against Texas
A&M, when the team competes at the Texas A&M Invitational in College
Station on Oct. 18.
