Slipping Past
Freshman linebacker Ryan McMillan stretches to reach
University of Texas freshman running back Hodges Mitchell
but comes up empty in Saturday's heartbreaking 38-31 loss to
the Longhorns at Rice Stadium. Rice dominated in the first
quarter and led for much of the game but saw that lead
evaporate in the fourth quarter when Texas capitalized on a
Rice roughing the punter penalty to go ahead 35-31.

Small explosion questions safety
by Maya Balakrishnan
An explosion took place in a physical chemistry lab around
dinnertime last Tuesday. While Brown College junior Alesha
Herrera performed the last run of her bomb calorimetry
experiment on at 6:30 p.m. according to directions in her physical
chemistry lab course, something unpredicted happened.
According to a statement she submitted to both the chemistry
department as well as the Health and Human Safety department,
the explosion occurred when she was preparing her fourth run
using a bomb calorimeter, a sealed metal container which is used
to identify an unknown substance. She used directions given in
her course lab manual while lab assistant Kevin Bates oversaw
that she followed the procedure exactly.
