* The Rice Young Democrats kick off their 1997 Luncheon Series with
guest speaker Anise Parker, Rice alumna and candidate for Houston City Council.
The presentation begins at noon in Meyer Conference Room in the Student
Center.
* The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra will open its season with a concert
featuring the works of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Igor Stravinsky. The concert
begins at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall. Tickets are $5 for students.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4
* The men's and women's swim team hosts the Blue/Gray Meet at Rice Pool
at 9 a.m. Come cheer on some star athletes who do all of their best work
underwater.
* RSVP sponsors Outreach Day. Students volunteer to help organizations
including the Humane Society and children's hospitals. Who needs to sleep in
on Saturdays, anyway?
* Attention, philosophy students! Bob Finch, president of Humanists of
Houston, presents a free book review of
The Philosophy of Humanism
by
Corliss Lamont, a leading proponent of the humanist rights of the individual
under the Constitution. The floor will be open to questions and discussion.

* The Houston Concert Band begins its fall season with a free concert at
3 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the RMC. The 80-piece band will perform works by

* The Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra opens its fall season with a program
featuring the works of Mozart and Britten. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in
Stude Concert Hall, and admission is free.
* The Museum of Health and Medical Science presents "Art of the Eye II: An
Exhibition on Vision." The exhibition includes 42 works of art, featuring 28
framed and 13 sculpture pieces by artists with vision impairments. The museum

* The Shepherd School presents a contemporary music concert of new
Australian percussion music and also features the U.S. premiere of Rice
professor Richard Lavenda's
Split 5 Ways
for solo marimba. The concert

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7
* Come to the Financial Services and Consulting Career Day from 2 p.m.
to 5 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Student Center. Smile, and don't forget

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8
* The Leadership Rice Panel Discussion Series sponsors "Leadership and
the Arts" from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Kyle Morrow Room of Fondren
Library. Free.
* The Women's Resource Center sponsors a lecture by Jane Dailey, history
professor, at noon in Miner Lounge at the Student Center entitled "What is a
Southern Woman?"
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9
* The volleyball team battles San Jose State University at 7:30 p.m. at
Autry Court.
