John Doerr succeeds in big business
| |
One of the most successful and influential venture
capitalists in the country also graduated from Rice. John Doerr received his
Bachelor's degree in 1973 and his Master's degree in 1974 from Rice in
electrical engineering.
Doerr, who grew up in St. Louis, Mo., has helped broker the deals creating
Netscape Communications Corp., Compaq Computer Corp., Intuit, Lotus Development
Corp. and Sun Microsystems. Doerr's business career began at Rice, as a member
of Lovett College. When he was only a sophomore, Doerr and two of his friends
started their own company. The company, Warren Rowe and Associates, wrote
graphics software. Doerr and his wife, Ann (Jones '75), established the L. John
and Ann Howland Doerr Chair in Computational Engineering at Rice. Both Doerrs
have served on the leadership committee for Rice's Computational Engineering
Campaign which began in 1993. EEC is an effort to raise $45 million to endow
faculty positions, graduate fellowships and postdoctoral teaching appointments
and to provide funds for equipment, research and for Anne and Charles Duncan
Hall.
Doerr now lives in Woodstock, Calif., and is a partner in the firm Kleiner,
Perkins, Caufield and Byers of Menlo Park, Calif. Rice awarded Doerr the
Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997.
