FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17

* Come to the Undergrounds ... deep down in the basement of Lovett at a place called Lyle's. The mike is open, and the drinks -- coffee, tea, hot chocolate -- are free. Get ready for fall break in a relaxed atmosphere. The action begins at 9:30 p.m.

* Women's tennis hosts the Rice Classic at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium all day. Come on out and cheer them on!

* The Rice Baha'i Association sponsors two one-act plays collectively named Believers . Angel of Fire and Snow is about a promising painter in New York, and Portals to Freedom is about a minster. In both plays, the characters encounter 'Abdu'l-Baha and experience life-changing climaxes. The plays begin at 8 p.m. in Hamman Hall. Admission is $5. * The Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Wortham IMAX Theatre present two thrilling IMAX adventures. Super Speedway delves into the drama of Indianapolis 500 car racing and weaves together the stories of some of the masters of the high-speed track. Paul Newman narrates. Blue Angels: The Magic of Flight brings together the thrill of flight, jet aircraft technology and the excitement of a Blue Angels air show. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18

* Have you ever had a near death or supernatural experience? The Spiritual Heights Wellness Center hosts a meeting of mystical minds. The 22 authors of the book When Ego Dies , a compilation of near death experiences, gather to discuss their life-after-death and mystical experiences. They convene from 2 to 4 p.m. at 508 Pecore Street in the Heights. Admission to this event is free. For more information, call (713) 864-4325.

* The Rice Players, along with Writers in the Round, present Shake Russell and Dana Cooper at Hamman Hall. The performance begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children. * The Houston Choral Society, under the direction of Betty Devine, presents its first concert of the year. The orchestra and full chorus, with principal soloists Julianne Best, soprano; Ephraim Cheng, baritone; Beverly Laubach, mezzo soprano; and Matthew Pittman, tenor, will perform Mozart's famed Requiem . A select ensemble of singers will perform the smaller Te Deum . The Requiem was last of Mozart's compositions, and mystery still surrounds its completion after his untimely death. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19

* The Houston Area Chapter of the National Organization for Women sponsors "Creating a Women Friendly World," the 1997 NOW convention. Keynote speaker Elizabeth Toledo, the newly elected NOW Vice President-Action, presents a lecture at 10:45 a.m. Toledo is co-chair of the statewide efforts to defeat Proposition 209, the anti-affirmative action ballot measure in California. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23

* What do Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Snoopy all have in common? Well, not only are they "Peanuts," they are also characters in the Brown College play You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Tonight is opening night. Call (713) 630-8113 for times and prices.

* The Rice University Lecture Series on Ethics, Politics and Society sponsors its first lecture of the 1997-'98 season. Derek Parfit, senior research fellow of All Souls College, Oxford University, and professor of philosophy, Harvard University, presents "Reasons for Caring and Acting" from 4 to 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Anne and Charles Duncan Hall. His book, Reasons and Persons , is lauded as one of the most important contemporary contributions to moral philosophy.

* The volleyball team takes on the women of Texas Christian University in Autry Court at 7:30 p.m.

* The Houston Friends of Music and the Shepherd School of Music cosponsor the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio. The program includes Debussy's Trio in G Major , Beethoven's Trio No. 4 in D Major, Op. 70 No. 1 "Ghost Trio" and Smetana's Trio in G minor, Op. 15 . * The Rice Chorale and Shepherd Singers present a concert at 8 p.m. in the Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall. * RPC and SCAB sponsor a costume ball. Look for time and place postings.

* Hanszen hosts a TG from 4 to 6 p.m. in the quad.

* The Rice Design Alliance and the Media Center sponsor two films about Los Angeles. * The Shepherd School of Music presents the first day of Brahmsfest with a faculty chamber music recital. Many faculty members will perform. Works include Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25 ; Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38 ; and Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano in E-flat Major, Op.40 . TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28

* Brahmsfest continues, as the Shepherd Singers perform with members of the voice faculty of Shepherd School. The program includes Johannes Brahms' Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103 and selected part songs. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Duncan Recital Hall.

* The volleyball team hosts the University of Houston at Autry Court at 7:30 p.m.

* The Houston Regional Career Fair takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Hotel at 2900 Briarpark Drive at Westheimer.
