The Rice women's tennis team looked strong in fall season
competition at the Inaugural Bruegger's Invitational in Columbus, Ohio last
weekend. The Owls were especially tough in singles matchplay, playing
competitively in each position and taking top honors in the No. 4 and 5 singles
spots.
In the No. 4 spot, junior Justyna Gudzowska plowed into the championship,
defeating Kim Guy of the University of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Erin Waters made a splash in the No. 5 singles spot, winning every
match in straight sets en route to the No. 5 singles title. Waters made quick
work of Mary Mahon of the University of Colorado, defeating her 6-2, 6-3 to win
the No. 5 singles final.
Senior Jane Trinh also made a strong showing in the No. 5 singles bracket.
Trinh, who was defeated in the first round by finalist Mahon in a tight 4-6,
4-6 match, came back swinging and defeated each of three opponents in straight
sets to claim the No. 5 consolation round title.
The Owls dominated virtually every bracket. In the No. 2 singles spot, freshman
Sara Borwell made it to the semifinals in the consolation round. In the No. 3
spot, senior Vessie Ivanova lost in a tight 6-7, 7-6, 1-6 loss to eventual
singles champion Jessica Garrow of Colorado.
In doubles play, the Owls faced more of a challenge. In the No. 1 spot, the
team of Borwell and Feasby was eliminated in the quarterfinals, as was the
team of Gudzowska and Velasco in the No. 2 spot. The Trinh/Talton team lost
in the quarterfinals of No. 3 doubles matchplay. The Lewis/Waters team made a
semifinal appearance in the consolation round of No. 2 doubles.
"We looked really strong, especially in the bottom part of the ladder,"
Gudzowska said. "And we're improving with each tournament. We'll be strong in
the spring
season."
