The
Thresher
was founded to serve as a forum for the Rice
community and to carry news of it. That requires your help to let us know what
is going on. Here's how the Rice community can contribute to the
Thresher.
We consider everything we receive. By submitting opinions or news in the right
format, you will be more likely to see them in print.
A
column
, which can run in the opinion section, the sports section or on
the backpage, is submitted by a columnist, who is not necessarily a staff
member. A
letter to the editor
can be written and submitted by anyone.
If we decide to print it, it will run in the opinion section. A letter to the
editor is not an article either.
Please note that you cannot submit an
article
or
story
without
talking to us first. (If you are interested in writing for the
Thresher
,
contact us.) A story about something in which you are involved is technically a
press release
that we may give to a writer to use as the basis for a
story or article. We may use a press release however we see fit, but a press
release is
not
an article.
While staff writers are paid, people who submit press releases are neither paid
nor entitled to a byline. Individual columnists are paid; columns written by
representatives of student organizations are not.
An organization may submit a display or classified advertisement that must be
paid for at a discounted rate for university advertisers. An organization may
also submit, free of charge, an item for the calendar or for the Notes and
Notices section of the classifieds. (Notes and Notices must not be for
profit-making endeavors.) These will run on a space-available basis.
Finally, if you have a comment, complaint or question about the
Thresher
, or if you are interested in joining the staff, please contact
Brian Stoler, editor in chief, by e-mail at
bstoler@rice.edu
or by phone
at the
Thresher
office at (713) 527-4801.
We look forward to hearing from you and receiving your submissions.
