The Men's Soccer Club's experienced veterans and deep pool of
underclassmen have led them to stymie their opponents this season. The Lads are
off to their best start in five years with a 4-1-2 record and anticipate more
success as the second half of the season approaches.
"We feel very fortunate to have such an abundance of talent and skill to draw
from this year," Michael McClintock, the club's president, said. "Although we
have had strong squads in the past, we look for an even better performance from
this year's Lads."
The team started off the season strong, scoring seven goals and allowing two in
victories over Lamar University and Sam Houston State University. After a loss
to Southwest Texas State University, the team recovered with a 1-1 tie against
the nationally ranked University of Texas. Consecutive victories against the
University of Texas at San Antonio and Sam Houston State then put them in first
place in their division.
The team meets the University of Houston tomorrow and then travels to New
Orleans to play Tulane University Sunday.
Crew to battle at the Head of the Charles
Another season of rowing is about to start for Rice Crew, this
time in dramatic fashion.
For the third year in a row, the Rice Rowing Club is sending crews to the
world's largest two-day regatta, the Head of the Charles, in Boston, Mass.,
Oct. 17-18. Like last year, the club is sending both a men's and a women's
four.
The men's team includes sophomore Sloan Speck, senior Mark Zeller, senior
Jameson James, junior Brian Green and senior coxswain Christi Calkins. The
women are junior Alida Tallman, senior Kathryn Gibson, sophomore Lindsay
Bonner, senior Adrienne O'Donnell and freshman coxswain Stacy Durbin. Last
year's teams both finished in the top 20.
There will be an official Rice Alumni reunion on the banks of the river
tomorrow afternoon during the races. Both the men's and women's teams will be
in bow No. 12.
Other regattas the teams plan on attending include the Pumpkin Head in Austin
Oct. 31 and the Head of the Chattahoochee in Gainesville, Ga., Nov. 7.
