Few attend initiative forum

A question-and-answer session concerning two initiatives on the upcoming General Elections ballot attracted about 15 students Sunday. Both initiatives propose ways to spend the $32,000 remaining from defunct blanket taxes.
The session followed the Student Association presidential debates in Farnsworth Pavilion in the Student Center.
Outdoors Club President Gabriel Garcia, sponsor of the initiative to construct a rock climbing wall in Autry Court, did not attend the information session because of a deadline for a class project.
Rice Habitat for Humanity Treasurer Rob Prentice presented an initiative that proposes the money be used to build a Habitat house. Prentice said that although the total cost of the house will be $50,000, he does not foresee difficulty raising the remaining $18,000.
"I haven't talked to Dr. Camacho about getting any money from his fund, but Houston Habitat for Humanity has promised to take care of the rest of the cost," Prentice said.
Prentice said that if the initiative passes, the site for the house would be ready in March, and the project would last about four weeks. Students could choose to have an ongoing relationship with the family who will move into the house, which will be located at the intersection of Halpern and Maury Streets, near the U.S. Highway 59, northeast of downtown.
"Houston Habitat for Humanity has basically told us we have this house. Two or three years ago, we did a house with Andersen Consulting for a semester, and that was too long. Even though we can't have a continued involvement in the maintenance of the actual house, we could possibly maintain a special relationship with the family," Prentice said.
SA Secretary Jamie Lisagor said that although the session was not mandatory for the sponsors of the initiatives, attendance was strongly encouraged.
"I don't want people to think I skipped [the session] because I didn't think it was important. I just could not make the time for it," Garcia said.
