A new mural was painted last week above the staircase to Willy's Pub.

A new mural advertises Willy's Pub above the staircase that leads to its entrance.

Hanszen College sophomore David Chien designed the green and black painting for the Student Center wall, which depicts people in various poses who form an arrow pointing down the stairs.

"Since the mural was to point people to Willy's Pub, the design became a collage of 'Pub-esque' people," Chien said.

Chien and Student Center Visual Arts Coordinator Becca Bergquist, a Hanszen junior, helped paint the mural. "The people from the Pub approached me first semester and asked for a design to let people know the Pub was downstairs and not just a part of Sammy's," Bergquist said. She then approached Chien about a design.

Student Center Director Boyd Beckwith said the encased sign above the mural has belonged to the Pub for many years but was damaged in a 1995 fire.

The Student Center paid Facilities and Engineering to repaint the sign's white letters and mount it on the wall last November.

"It is a really cool piece, so we had it done over," Beckwith said.

According to Beckwith, the Pub's previous student management first requested additional advertising space because they felt the Pub needed a bigger presence in the Student Center.

"I like the fact that student artwork is being featured in the building," Beckwith said. "Hopefully it gives them a sense that the Student Center is theirs."

Chien is editorial cartoonist and staff illustrator for The Rice Thresher.
