Anything you can do, I can do better.
Just weeks after the women's basketball team hired former standout Marla Brumfield as an assistant coach, the volleyball team brought back one of its own legends.
Tiffany Carrethers, one of the great players in school history, is returning to her alma mater as the Owls' new assistant volleyball coach, head coach Julio Morales announced Aug. 9.
Carrethers, who graduated from Rice in 1999, led the 1998 Owls to their best season in history. On the way, Carrethers earned first-team all-Western Athletic Conference honors and was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week after leading the Owls to their first win over a ranked opponent.
Carrethers left her mark in the Rice record books as well. She finished as the school's all-time block assists leader (363), was second in total blocks (447) and hitting percentage (.280) and third in kills (1,358).
Carrethers spent the last year and a half with the United States Professional Volleyball league, where she played for coach Arie Selinger.
"I'm excited to be back home at Rice," Carrethers, a graduate of Pasadena Dobie High School, said. "I feel that with my experience with the USPV, I'll be able to make a contribution to the team."
"We are excited to have her back," Morales said. "Her experience with the USPV has given her a different perspective on the court, and she has worked with one of the most prestigious volleyball coaches in the world. She also knows how things happen here, which should help her help the team."
