New police officers hired
By Olivia Allison

Four new police officers were hired last spring and over the summer, and at least three more officers will be hired in the future, Campus Police Chief Bill Taylor said.

All four officers will be assigned to the colleges for the "third shift" with Sgt. Les Hulsey, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The officers were hired after participating in assessment centers, events at which administrators, staff, students and professors select the officers by evaluating a series of role-playing situations and interviews. These were held at the end of the spring semester and midway through the summer.

Marcus King was hired at the end of the spring semester. King graduated from the Houston Community Colleges Police Academy with his Texas Police Officer's license last April. Rice is the first police agency he has worked for.

Alex Trevino has been a police officer since 1995, working in police departments in McAllen and Palestine, Texas. Trevino was hired during the summer.

Derek Griffin graduated from the same class as King from the HCC police academy, and this is also the first law enforcement agency he has worked for.

Mary Marsh, also hired during the summer, served 12 years in military law enforcement, and then worked for the Killeen Independent School District police department for more than three years.

A fifth officer was hired in the spring but did not perform satisfactorily during his probation period, Taylor said. This still-vacated position is one of three remaining openings, Taylor said. The other two openings stem from Lt. Terry Ryals' resignation Aug. 15. Taylor added that an advertisement was placed in the Aug. 20 Houston Chronicle for the openings.
