No more restricted distribution courses
by Elizabeth Jardina

The addition of a language requirement isn't the only significant change in this year's General Announcements.

This year's freshman class and other students who choose to graduate under the new book no longer have to fulfill six hours of restricted distribution requirements. Instead, they must complete 12 hours of distribution credit in each of the three divisions. Normally, the 12 required hours within the division of a student's major will be fulfilled by classes required for the major. A sociology major, for example, will almost certainly fulfill Group II requirements by taking sociology classes.

Students may graduate under the General Announcements from the year they matriculate or the year they graduate, said former Director of Academic Advising and current Assistant to the President Mark Scheid. However, when a student adopts the General Announcements requirements from a particular year, she must adopt the whole thing. For example, a student with a major in the engineering or natural sciences school may not be exempt from restricted distribution requirements (which include Humanities 101 and 102) and the language requirement.

Scheid said that students may petition the committee on Examinations and Standing if they wish to graduate under requirements from a year other than their first or last.

Students using General Announcements other than the 2000-'01 must still complete restricted distribution requirements. A complete list of distribution and restricted distribution courses will be available on the Academic Advising Web site at http://www.rice.edu/advising, Director of Academic Advising John Hutchinson said.

Huchinson said that a potentially confusing change is that the 100 level language courses will no longer count for Group I distribution. However, language classes at the 200 level and higher will still count for distribution credit.

He emphasized that even though this year's freshmen won't get distribution credit for 100 level languages, students who got credit for those classes in previous years will not have their credit revoked. "Having once earned distribution or restricted distribution credit, you've got it," Hutchinson said.

He also said students receiving course credit for a score of 4 or 5 on an Advanced Placement test will receive distribution credit if that course normally carries distribution credit.

For example, a student with a 5 on the AP European History test will receive credit for History 101 and 102 and will have fulfilled six hours of Group II distribution credit. AP tests that give general history, English, physics, environmental sciences and Latin credit will also come with the appropriate number of hours of distribution credit in the division. However, students who take the studio art test will not get Group I distribution credit because of the decision made last year not to allow courses in the creative arts to carry distribution credit.
