Student Association notes
The Student Association Senate met Monday. The following were discussed:
* The SA is making 500 T-shirts for the homecoming game against Southern Methodist University. The game is Nov. 4.
* Hanszen College junior Jamie Lisagor has arranged for the SA to rent a Winnie the Pooh moonwalk for Project Pumpkin, which will be held Oct. 28 from 1-4 p.m. in the Hanszen quad. The event, sponsored by the Rice Student Volunteer Program, brings about 500 underprivileged children to campus for a Halloween carnival. If any other student organizations want to sponsor a booth, they can contact RSVP at rsvp@rice.edu.
* Petitions for the positions of SA treasurer and homecoming king and queen are due at noon today.
* Three members of the university standing committee on parking came to gather student opinion about parking on campus. They announced that the underground parking being built under the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management will most likely be for paying customers. They also said that University Police are working on color-coded signs to tell students, faculty and staff and visitors where they can park in the Stadium Lot. The holes in the Stadium Lot are being fixed. In addition, an unofficial shuttle stop has been added at the end of the Inner Loop by Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Lovett College President Phil Alexander brought up problems with parking in the south colleges residential lot because students are parking there without parking passes. Officer Lisa Heiden said that if students find a full lot to be a problem, they should call the University Police, which can issue tickets to illegally parked students.
* Hanszen senior and SA Parliamentarian Rudy Fink reported on the University Standing Committee on the Library. The Board of Trustees was not "inspired" by the design for the remodeling of Fondren submitted by the design architect, so they're going back to the drawing board, Fink said. Hanszen President and senior Lindsay Germano expressed concern about sufficient study space for Rice students in the library.
* Germano, a member of the University Standing Committee on Athletics, reported that there are plans underway to beautify the entrance to Reckling Park and possibly to add two more tennis courts to Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. She also reported that a locker room for the women's soccer team will be created by dividing the current women's swimming locker room in half.
* Next week, the senators will administer a poll to measure student reaction to the newspapers in the colleges program tested at Wiess and Hanszen Colleges this year.
* The SA Web page is in the process of being updated. Anyone with ideas about what should be on the page should contact SA President Lindsay Botsford at lindsayk@rice.edu.
* Baker College Senator Sanford Holmes asked how students can correct their information in the online directory. Germano informed him that there's a link on the directory for changes.
The senate will next meet Oct. 23 at 10 p.m. in Farnsworth Pavilion in the Student Center.
