m.o.p. - Warriorz
Todd Makse

The word "real" is thrown around much too often in the world of hip-hop. The M.O.P. (Mash Out Posse) does not have to use the word: They define it. Lil' Fame and Billy Danzenie are the two remaining members of what was once a much larger crew in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Warriorz is this "last generation's" fourth, and best, album.

The group is admittedly too hardcore for many hip-hop fans. Much to their credit, M.O.P. has remained true to their style since their first album, 1994's To the Death. At the time, their single, "How About Some Hardcore," was a minor hit in New York and helped them build a small, loyal underground following.

Warriorz is the pair's first real chance at commercial success for two reasons. One is the relentless promotion of the album by influential people in the industry, including Funkmaster Flex and DJ Premier, who want to see the pair get its due. The second is the high quality of the music, especially the second single, "Ante Up."

"Ante Up" features an incredible display of energy over one of the best beats I've ever heard. The pair comes close to matching the same intensity on several songs, but two that particularly stand out are "G-Building" and "Calm Down." Another excellent song, "Everyday," is an unusually soulful collaboration with the Product G&B.

The production on Warriorz is also top-notch, higlighted by the work of DJ Premier and DR Period. Many of the beats are crafted perfectly for Fame and Danzenie; few other rappers could make them work so well.

Beyond these four songs, the rest of Warriorz is of similarly high quality. It boasts a generous 18 songs and easily ranks among the best albums of the year. In an era where accusations of selling out are rampant, the M.O.P. has kept it real, treating their true fans to a nearly flawless album.
