KTRU hosts variations on pop

KTRU sponsored a night of feminist/queer pop on campus Oct. 12, executed in very different ways by the two bands on the bill.
Le Tigre's electronic punk songs revel in the "cut-up" technique with a definite activist edge, with music heavy on programming and sampling. Lead vocalist Kathleen Hanna, most famous as half of the seminal riot grrrl punk duo Bikini Kill, was a loaded gun onstage, at times teasing the audience of several hundred Rice students and fans from Houston.
Lord Douglas Phillips opened for Le Tigre with its brand of smart, self-consciously funny, folksy rock. The group, fronted by Austin singer/songwriter Gretchen Phillips, got the crowd laughing and their feet tapping.
The Oct. 12 show in the Grand Hall was one of several shows KTRU is sponsoring this fall. The shows are free with a Rice ID. KTRU's next installment is tonight's Bratmobile show at 10 p.m. in Sammy's in the Rice Memorial Center.
