Lyle's, Martel theater receive grant
by Martha Jeong
For the thresher

The first Dr. Bill Wilson Student Initiative Grant will be used to improve the Undergrounds site in the Lovett College basement and to help fund a Martel College theater production this spring.

Lovett Vice President Anna Witt applied for the grant on behalf of the college. The improvement project for Lyle's, the name of the Lovett basement space, will receive $4,500. Wiess College sophomore Victoria Zyp, who is on the Martel Founding Committee, received $1,000 to help mount a production of student-written plays this spring sponsored by Martel.

Witt said Lovett will use the money for new lighting and sound equipment in Lyle's, possibly including loudspeakers, a CD player, headphones and acoustic foam soundproofing.

The Undergrounds is a venue for student performers that serves free coffee and hot chocolate on Friday nights.

Witt said Lovett is in the process of deciding what specific changes to make. She said improvements to Lyle's should be finished by the beginning of next semester.

Zyp will use the money from the Dr. Bill grant to fund a production called "Martel Take Ten," a series of ten-minute plays written by students. The money will be used for costumes, advertising, programs, lights and other costs. Zyp also received an Envision Grant from Leadership Rice to fund the project.

Zyp said "Martel Take Ten" will accept play submissions from all students through Dec. 1 and will be performed April 19-22 in Farnsworth Pavilion in the Student Center. She is coordinating the project but said that anyone can help.

The grant was established in honor of Wiess Resident Associate and Electrical Engineering Professor Bill Wilson. The idea for the grant began when Wilson's friend, Keith Meehan (Wiess '81), proposed creating a fund in Wilson's name. Wilson decided the fund should help for students innovatively improve student life.

The committee that reviewed the proposals and decided on the allocation of funds included Wiess members Wilson, Master Paula Hutchinson, senior Stanton Champion, College Coordinator Sue Gauthier and associate Ed Harris (Wiess '82).

The group considered 23 student proposals, which included a teahouse, outdoor classrooms, a film festival, a dance club and a Zen garden.

"We were extremely pleased with the variety and thoughtfulness that went into all of the proposals," Hutchinson said. "Each and every single one we looked at and asked, 'Could we do this?'"

Wilson said the group chose Lyle's because it is a venue for a variety of events and groups, notably the Undergrounds.

Hutchinson said practicality had to be considered in their decision, so the committee chose proposals that "we felt had the best chance in accomplishing something for the student body."
