Unbeaten lacrosse awaits A&M

After opening the season with two wins last week, the men's club lacrosse team will be looking for revenge against its biggest and most challenging rival when Texas A&M University comes to campus Sunday.

The Aggies, who won the Lone Star Conference title a year ago and finished the year ranked 12th in the nation, easily handled the Owls in Rice's season opener last year. This time around, a more experienced Owl squad hopes things will be different.

"We are always solid physically, as are they, but this year I think we really have the edge mentally," senior co-captain Brian Nash said. "We are an experienced team now and I think we can outplay them by sticking to our game plan and forcing them to make stupid mistakes. This game will be won in the fourth quarter, and I think we have an excellent chance this year."

Rice is 2-0 after notching home wins over Stephen F. Austin State University Saturday and Southern Methodist University Sunday.

Rice jumped out to an early lead against a weak Lumberjack squad by scoring early and with ease. Junior captain Ben Amis scored a hat trick, and junior attackman Chris Glass netted four goals and added four assists to earn the game ball in Rice's 14-8 win.

Sunday's game against a more experienced SMU club proved to be a greater challenge. The Mustangs dominated the first quarter, but four second quarter goals allowed Rice to take a 6-5 halftime lead.

But SMU wasn't done, scoring three quick goals to take an 8-6 third-quarter lead. The Mustangs continued to lead into the final period before Glass winged a sidearm shot past the goalkeeper to tie the score at nine.

After the teams traded goals, junior Adam Lazowska scored the game-winner and sophomore goalkeeper Adam Gottlieb made two clutch saves in the final minute to preserve the 11-10 victory.

"This was an important win for us," senior midfielder Paul Aronson said. "We really didn't have our A-game today and we still were able to pull out a victory. Everyone really stepped it up at the end, especially the defense."
