Discussion of co-presidency tabled

Hanszen College juniors Gavin Parks and Jamie Lisagor will be allowed to run together for Student Association president.
The SA Senate voted Monday 12 to 8 to table discussion on the constitutionality of more than one person holding the office of president. The vote was a reversal from an earlier straw poll when 10 people were in favor of tabling the issue and 11 were against doing so.
Next year's senate, which will take office March 19, can choose to open the issue again.
The current SA Constitution does not specify how many students can occupy the office, but senate members have discussed clarifying the issue in the SA bylaws.
SA President Lindsay Botsford said it was appropriate to table discussion because Lisagor and Parks had already announced their candidacy for SA president.
"I think it gets into a real sticky situation - knowing people are running already and then trying to take action to prevent that," Botsford said. "The line between personal and ideological is mixed."
Hrishikesh Lotlikar (Baker '98) and Ryan Melgiri (Baker '99) ran together in 1997 for the SA presidency but lost the election.
Parks and Lisagor said they will be willing to answer any questions students have about the idea of a co-presidency but could not comment yet because the designated campaigning period has not begun.
"During our campaign we'll definitely talk about it," Parks said.
Wiess College senator, Ricky Kalra, a sophomore, said last week that he was considering running for president. He said on Tuesday he is now undecided about running. Kalra, a member of the Martel Founding Committee, said he is concerned that his involvement at Martel College may be too time-consuming after talking to Botsford about the time commitment of being SA president.
