A&M offense proves too much for lacrosse
by Jake Robson

Despite two non-conference wins last week, the men's club lacrosse team ran out of steam Sunday, falling 22-7 to Texas A&M University in Rice's Lone Star Conference opener.

The Aggies, currently ranked in the top 10 in the nation, jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three unanswered goals in the game's opening minutes.

Rice hung close in the first period on goals from junior attackman Chris Glass and sophomore attackman George McGuirk. But the Aggies countered with a late first-period goal followed by three quick second-period goals.

From that point on, A&M waged an onslaught on the Rice goal and surged to a 14-3 halftime lead.

Glass opened the second half by scoring his second goal of the game, but A&M continued its domination, beating Rice in the transition game and scoring with quick, accurate shots.

Though A&M's 22 goals more than doubled Rice's previous game high for goals allowed, coach Joe Olivier still found positives in the game

A coast-to-coast goal by junior Ben Amis and several spectacular saves by goalie Adam Gottlieb highlighted the second half. And this year's match was more competitive than last year, when the Aggies ran away with an easy 20-2 win over Rice.

"We were getting some great hits in on their attackmen," Olivier said. "They were just coming a second late. It's great for our young D to play against an attack with really good ball skills like A&M."

Next weekend, Rice travels to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech University in a league match, followed by a friendly game against the University of Illinois, another top-10 team.

"We have a lot to work on in the next few weeks," Glass said. "If we keep improving, we can eventually get to the level of a team like A&M. We think we'll be ready to make some noise come playoff time."
