CD Reviews: low/things we lost in the fire

Through five full-length LPs and a slew of EPs, limited-edition releases and 7-inch records, Duluth, Ga., band Low has built a name for itself within the friendly confines of the independent scene.

After several years with indie power Sub Pop, they've found a home on Chicago-based Kranky Records along with innovative groups such as Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Things We Lost in the Fire, Low's newest release, is finally garnering the widespread attention the band deserves. In the four weeks since its release, it has risen to No. 1 on College Music Journal's top 200, based on college radio airplay.

Things We Lost is no dramatic departure from Low's trademark sound. Songs are stripped to their essentials: slow tempos, quiet male and female vocals, powerful lyrics and minimal instrumentation.

The opening track, "Sunflower," has a lovely Neil Young-ish melody, with shimmering guitars reminiscent of Low's 1996 single "Over the Ocean." "Closer" is a delicate love song about going through hard times. It's great mood music.

"Whore" is traditional Low - quiet yet intense. "Embrace" is a dramatic, minimal piece that builds through beautiful vocals.

Orchestral parts add to the powerful ending of the upbeat "Like a Forest," while the finger picking in "Kind of Girl" successfully adds sonic diversity.

Low's sound remains true to its name: soft, dreary, pensive and sparse. This new album stretches their creativity, and the result is a beautiful, mellow record that is a wonderful addition to any collection.
