New Orientation Week Student Director Shannon Scott is already thinking about August.
As O-Week student director, Scott, a Hanszen College junior, will be responsible for planning all university-wide O-Week events, such as matriculation and the Autry Court Rally. One of the main responsibilities of the O-Week student director, Scott said, is to act as a liaison between the university and the O-Week coordinators at each college.
Scott advised at Hanszen last year and co-advised at Will Rice College in 1999.
Scott said she wanted to be student director because of positive experiences she had during O-Week.
"I really love O-Week, and it has been a large part of my Rice experience," Scott said. "I want to make the best possible transition for freshmen."
Scott said this fall's O-Week will be different because of several changes, especially the alteration of college cheers.
Scott said cheers are a very important part of O-Week, and the new cheers policy is a step in the right direction.
"I think cheers are a great part of the college tradition, but O-Week should be all good," Scott said. "No one should feel alienated."
Scott said one of her goals as student director is to increase school spirit, something she's familiar with after being Sammy the Owl this year.
"I'd really like to foster Rice spirit, she said. "O-Week is one of those times that everything gets set - ideas and impressions are cemented during O-Week."
To increase university-wide spirit, Scott said she believes it is essential that students get to know not only people from their college during O-Week, but also those from other colleges.
Scott suggested a "Rice Night In," in which freshmen from different colleges could participate in activities together.
Scott will live on campus during the summer to prepare for O-Week, and her term as student director lasts until next March.
