CD Reviews: project pat /Mista Don't Play

Memphis rap, more so than that of any other city, is definitely an acquired taste. Without exception, it is dark, brooding and intense; it is not the kind of music that makes you want to dance or sing.

Project Pat, a member of the Hypnotize Camp Posse, embodies this style, but with a rhyme scheme that is often lighter and more playful.

Mista Don't Play is Pat's third album, coming on the heels of last summer's unsuccessful Murderers and Robbers. On that album, Pat outdid himself on the track "Red Rum," which ingeniously sampled the voice of Danny Torrance in The Shining.

Nonetheless, Pat's first single from Mista Don't Play, "Chicken Head," outshines that song easily. The track, which features LaChat and Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J and DJ Paul, is a testament to the fact that brilliance does not require complexity. The song is nothing more than a classic battle of the sexes, and the hook is just chicken sounds and an endless repetition of the title. And yet the song is hilarious and the beat is irresistible, making it the single best song so far this year.

Another good song is "We Ain't Scared Hoe," which combines a recycled Three 6 Mafia beat with music resembling Carmina Burana to create a truly original sound. "Fuckin With the Best" and "Break Da Law 2001" are two good posse cuts, featuring many members of the Hypnotize Camp Posse.

The biggest problem with the album is that few of the 13 other songs are especially good. Project Pat clearly knows the formula that keeps the clubs crunk in Memphis. The majority of the songs are aimed at that audience, and as such are somewhat short on creative lyrics and beats.

Although it lacks the consistency of Pat's debut, Ghetty Green, Mista Don't Play is still a solid album that pushes the Memphis scene one step closer to the mainstream. Project Pat, with his charismatic and almost amusing style, serves well as an ambassador to the rest of the rap world.
