To register for any of the following programs, please visit the Recreation Center Administration offices, located on the second floor of the Gymansium Building, any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Fall 2008 Programs

The Fitness Edge: Boot Camp - Morning and Evening Sessions

Session I Dates and Times:

  • Sep 8 - Dec 5 (13 weeks)
  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:15–7:15 a.m.
  • 39 classes—all meet at the Rice Track Stadium unless otherwise noted
  • Cost:
    $80 - Students
    $160 - Faculty/Staff/Community Members

  • Sep 9 - Dec 4 (13 weeks)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • 26 classes—all meet at the corner of field 7 unless otherwise noted

Fitness Edge Boot Camp is a results-driven conditioning program. It is conducted in an indoor/outdoor environment, utilizing a military-style format, coupled with the most progressive, innovative, and creative exercises in fitness.

This class will push you to your limits-and force your body to change. These fast and furious workouts are all you need to get into the best shape of your life. Dynamic and different every day, this program will keep you guessing but always give you a great workout.

Boot Camp workouts include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular, speed and endurance training, strength training, partner resistance exercises, agility work, and the old stand by: stairs. We expand your fitness horizons with fitness games, group challenges, wheelbarrow races, medicine ball drills, plyometrics, box drills, fartleks, obstacle courses, guerilla drills, and multiple versions of the military standard - push-ups and sit ups!

Chen Style Tai Chi

Dates and Times:

  • Sep 9 - Dec 4 (13 weeks)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6–7 a.m.

Tai Chi combines movement, meditation, and breath regulation to enhance the flow of vital energy in the body, improve blood circulation, and enhance immune functions. Tai Chi is one of the most broadly applicable systems of self-care in the world.

Lifelong Spine Health

Session I Dates and Times:

  • Sep 9 - Oct 16 (6 weeks)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7–8 a.m.

Spinal health leads to improved general health. This class will guide you through strengthening and stabilizing the spine without excessively large or strenuous movements that can provide great benefit for overall health.

Introduction to Pilates

Dates and Times:

  • Sep 15, 17, 22, 24 (2 weeks)
  • Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m.
  • Meets in the Wiess College Dance Room
  • Cost:

    $35 - Faculty/Staff/Community Members

This class will introduce the language of Pilates to beginning students. This class will focus on breathing, identifying the core of support for exercises, and pelvis stabilization. A great start for those that have never practiced the technique of Pilates.

Women on Weights

Dates and Times:

  • Sep 23 - Oct 30 (6 weeks)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Meets in the Weight Room
  • Cost:

This women only class will educate women on the purpose and importance of strength training. We will cover proper strength training techniques, correct body alignment and various formats for strength training programs.

Free Programs - Fall 2008

Weight and Fitness Room Orientations:

Want to learn how to use the equipment in the Recreation center Weight and Fitness Rooms? Attend one of these orientations to learn the basics of resistance and cardio machines in these 1 hour sessions. Open to any and free for all. Register early because space is limited! Email fitness [at] rice [dot] edu to reserve your spot.

  • Session 1 – Thu, Sep 4th at 12:00pm (1 hour)
  • Session 2 – Mon, Sep 22nd at 8:30pm (1 hour)

Weekend Warrior Lecture Series (1.5 Hours Each):

There is nothing tougher than a true weekend warrior; one that battles the daily grind, providing for the family, attending classes, etc. only to find some time to follow a true passion...dominating the competition. The Weekend Warrior Series is your place to find information on any and all things to enhance your sport related passion. Email fitness [at] rice [dot] edu to reserve your spot.

The Weekend Warrior Series is for active people who:

  • Plan on competing in a race or special event
  • Have interest in taking their sport more seriously
  • Look to their sport/activity for weight loss and improved health
  • Are eager to get the most in a limited amount of time

  • Sat, Sep 20 – Warm Up and Cool Down, 1-2:30 p.m
  • Sat, Sep 27 – Injury Prevention Techniques, 1-2:30 p.m
  • Sat, Oct 4 – Cutting/Jumping Techniques, 1-2:30 p.m
  • Sat, Oct 11 – Endurance Sports Training, 1-2:30 p.m
